It is almost time for our annual All Henrico Reads event! For All Henrico Reads we work with Henrico County Public Schools to select a book (or more) that everyone can read and discuss. We have had a lot of fun doing this in the past with Julia Alvarez and M.T. Anderson. This year is extra special! It just so happens to be the 400th Anniversary of the founding of Henrico County. So for this year’s All Henrico Reads event we were able to have David Baldacci as our featured author.
Mr. Baldacci is a Henrico native and has become a VERY popular and successful writer. He graduated from Henrico High School and Virginia Commonwealth University. He held a number of interesting jobs while studying law at the University of Virgina…a night guard and vacuum-cleaner salesman were two. Would you buy a vacuum-cleaner from him? I probably would.
After finishing law school, he worked as a trial lawyer and corporate attorney. During this time he began writing. After a few rejections his first book Absolute Power was published in 1996 and made into a movie the following year. It’s safe to say that his career as a writer has been a success. He has over 20 novels, numerous short stories and even some books for young readers.
The two books chosen to highlight this year are Wish You Well and The Camel Club. The schools have been encouraging their students to read these books all year. The middle schools have been reading Wish You Well and the high schools are reading The Camel Club. Henrico students have done many creative projects based on these books. If you have some time take, a look at this video the librarian at Byrd Middle School made as an example for her students. It is very good.
We hope you can attend the big event. It is going to be at the Glen Allen High School auditorium on April 5th. The doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the program will start at 7:00 p.m. It is absolutely free. Seating is limited so make sure you arrive early enough to get a seat. He will be signing books after the event too!
